LAPEER — It’s a project that’s seeing success that no one could have anticipated.

The Sew Crazy Community Quilt project, created by Linda Knop and organized by Knop and Sew Crazy owner Gwyn Stoneburg, was originally intended as a one-off venture. The pair thought they’d be able to get enough community members into the store to contribute squares to create a quilt over a year. Now, only a few months in, they’re already on their third quilt.

“It’s been such a great success,” said Stoneburg. “We never could have guessed it would be like this.” After completing the first quilt in less than a month, Stoneburg and Knop opted to donate it to Taste of Lapeer, last month’s dinner and auction in support of Lapeer Area Citizens Against Domestic Abuse (LACADA). It went for $2,500, the highest earning auction item of the evening.

Now, less than a month later, a second quilt has been completed, and on Monday Stoneburg and Knop donated the community’s handiwork to the Family Literacy Center (FLC) for their upcoming “Thanks For Giving” dinner and auction, to be held Friday (Nov. 2) at the Lapeer Country Club. Stoneburg said she hopes the second quilt garners as much attention, and bids, as the first.

According to FLC Program Coordinator Meredith Donohue, the non-profit Lapeer-based education organization “couldn’t be more excited” to have been chosen by Stoneburg and Knop as recipients of the newest quilt. “We’re honored to have been selected for this quilt,” she said.

Those interested in contributing a square can do so by visiting Sew Crazy on 69 W. Nepessing St. in downtown Lapeer, and work is already well-underway on the third community quilt, Stoneburg said, and while a benefitting organization has not been selected yet, she’s taking suggestions. To contact Stoneburg, call 810-664-3566.
