Looking Ahead to 2023 TV

We’re forward thinkers here at Nick’s Flix

HQ. We’re done talking about 2022 and all its associated zaniness. Instead, it’s all about that new hot 2023.

With a new year brings plenty of excitement in the realm of moving pictures, be they small and in your living room, or large and in a dark room full of strangers down the street. We’ve spent the better part of the year talking about things as they’ve happened (which I guess makes sense for a movies/television review column) but today and next week, we’re going to talk about things before they happen. If only there was a word for that, like “review” but for upcoming things, like a “pre” review. I guess we’ll never know.

Let’s touch on TV first this week, then head to the cinema after that.

NICK’S FLIX GUIDE TO 2023 TV

I’ll preface this now to mention that there are three categories of television that we’ll be ignoring for the purposes of concision – reality TV, new seasons of established shows, and boring cop procedurals are all omitted. The only exception to that is Alert, which debuts on Jan. 8 and is what appears to be a boring cop procedural, but I know a guy who’s in it, so that’s cool.

Also, you may notice that many of these shows listed debut in the next month or two, and that’s because it’s hard to look forward to shows that we don’t even know about yet. We’ll circle back to what’s coming in 2023 in a few months, when networks, streaming services and what-have-you start parading out the rest of their shiny new 2023 shows.

Copenhagen Cowboy (Jan. 5, Netflix) – If you like synthwave, glacially slow panning shots, cheekbones and sudden jarring violence, it’s likely you already know who Nicolas Winding Refn is. The creator behind the movies Drive and Neon Demon has a series hitting Netflix, and it’s pretty evident that if nothing else, the guy’s got style. Maybe even a little too much.

The Last of Us (Jan. 15, HBO) – It’ll likely catch people by surprise when they learn that this one’s based on the video game of the same name. The Last of Us will likely be the first big hit of the new year, and I’m certainly looking forward to it.

That ‘90s Show (Jan. 19, Netflix) – Netflix continues its strategy into 2023 of resurrecting dead shows to parade their desiccated remains around. The ‘90s are so retro now, and I, a child of the ‘90s, am no longer cool.

Poker Face (Jan. 26, Peacock) – As many will likely be checking out Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery on Netflix this week, the creator of that movie, Rian Johnson, also has a mystery series heading to Peacock next month. It’s about murder and features Natasha Lyonne, so it’ll likely be good.

True Lies (Feb. 23, CBS) – Speaking of inexplicable remakes, the James Cameron/Arnold Schwarzenegger spy/explosion extravaganza is seeing new life as a series. Here’s hoping they keep the Arnold one-liners.

The Walking Dead: Dead City (April, AMC) – I watched every episode of the original run of The Walking Dead, which, if you’re counting, was 177. Am I excited for the spin-off, that features two returning characters heading to New York City for some reason? Yes. There’s also a spinoff featuring two other characters also coming in 2023, as well as a third spinoff that might debut in 2023. If you thought Walking Dead was going to stay dead dead, sorry/you’re welcome.

Fallout (Amazon) – There’s no word on when this will even happen. We don’t even know if it’ll debut this year. But I’m still adding here as wishful thinking. One of the greatest video game series of all time is being made into a television show, so please, don’t be bad.

On the radar: Agatha: Coven of Chaos, Ahsoka, Maniac Cop, Circe, Time Bandits, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Shrinking, Ironheart, Gen V, Alaska Daily
