‘Science Saturday’ to be held at Skinner Lake

OREGON TWP. — What started last spring as a project by a few seniors in Cheryl Butterfield’s AP Environmental Science class has been adopted by a new generation of students.

Juniors Gage Houghtaling, Eli Chaffin, Chase Burton, Ian McAllister and Carson Currie will be carrying on the new tradition of Science Saturday, hosted at the Lapeer Community Schools Outdoor Center at Skinner Lake. The educational event is scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 12 and free and open to the public.

Currie said the event is a fun-filled experience aimed at families looking to learn about the nature right in their backyard. “Anyone is invited, especially elementary-aged kids and their families,” he said. Currie and his fellow AP Environmental Science class visit the educational facility frequently, and he said it was an easy decision to once again facilitate Science Saturday. “Our AP class goes on field trips to Skinner Lake almost monthly, basically to help out the lake,” he said. “We’ve been planning this throughout the whole year.”

Science Saturday will feature several activities and opportunities to learn about nature, including take-home crafts like birdhouses as well as face painting and more. Also onsite from 1-3 p.m. providing hands-on learning opportunities will be Waterford-based Science Alive!, an interactive learning experience that allows students to see and touch living animals under the guidance of qualified teachers and biologists. “They bring in a bunch of animals and reptiles,” said Currie. “It gives kids an opportunity to be up close to animals they might not have been able to have before.”

Check Lapeer Community Schools social media pages for any weather related changes at Facebook.com/LapeerSchools. “Anyone interested in science should come, we just want to have a good turn out,” said Currie.

The Lapeer Community Schools Outdoor Center at Skinner Lake is located at 2125 Ferns Rd. Attendees will be directed to park at nearby Camp Lael and will be shuttled to the Outdoor Center.
