Food Truck Festival to roll into Lapeer

LAPEER — Beginning this May, the Lapeer Area Chamber of Commerce is bringing some food truck fun to downtown Lapeer. The events are scheduled to take place on the second Monday of May, June, July and September from 4-8:30 p.m.

“We chose Monday in conjunction with the downtown Monday Night Car Cruise,” said Neda Payne, the executive director of the Chamber of Commerce. “Our goal is to offer two great events on the same night that will appeal to a wide range of individuals and encourage them to stroll through downtown while experiencing the car cruise. We’re excited for residents and visitors to come and explore our downtown.”

The Food Truck Festival will be held in the parking lot behind the AT&T building off of Court Street, along the north side of the Flint River along Annrook Park and over to Saginaw Street. The location allows for a short walk over the bridge for those that wish to sit under the pavilion in Annrook Park, and a short stroll up Court Street to the downtown area where the Monday Night Car Cruise will be underway.

“Typically, fans of car cruises seem to be primarily baby boomers, and food truck festivals appeal to most everyone, especially our millennials and gen x,” said Payne. “We’re hoping to draw a very diverse audience, because we want people of all ages to see how vital our downtown is. Our goals, as well as those of the Downtown Development Authority (DDA), are to increase interest in the downtown businesses and bring attention to other events that take place downtown, like the Optimist’s Nightmare on Nepessing, Oktoberfest, Art on Nepessing, the Historic Farmers Market of Lapeer and many more. Each event has its own particular flair and fun, while also highlighting and embracing our downtown. We want to generate longterm interest in what the downtown has to offer.”

Payne says that the first date of the event will be a “test run,” which will allow organizers to gauge interest and plan for future enhancements to the events.

“We’re already seeing lots of excitement on social media,” said Payne, “and we have some ideas we’re tossing around, like theme nights, to make the events even better moving forward.”
