LakeVille: Bad passes and mistakes plagued the LakeVille boys’ basketball team during Tuesday’s season opener. LakeVille took a 60-28 loss against Birch Run at home.

Birch Run jumped out to a 17-8 lead in the first and extended its lead to 29-11 by halftime. Following the break, Birch Run stayed hot, outscoring LakeVille 16-9 for a 45-20 lead. In the fourth, LakeVille added another eight while Birch Run added 15 for the 60-28 final.

Alex Gill led the Falcons with nine points. Nathan Athey added eight and Jacob Main had seven.

LakeVille, 0-1, hosts Montrose tomorrow at 7 p.m. – K.R.

North Branch: The Broncos got the season off on the right foot after defeating Yale 61-52 on Tuesday. North Branch grabbed a 19-11 lead in the first and held on strong for a 33-32 lead at halftime. In the third, Yale stole a 44-42 lead, but North Branch battled back to outscore Yale 19-8 in the fourth to take the win.

Riley Bugg led North Branch with 20 points and six boards. Gerrid Rutledge chipped in 11 points and snagged four rebounds. Adam Barrows tossed in nine and grabbed eight boards. Braden Kronz added eight points and seven rebounds and Nathan Martin had eight points.

North Branch hosts Imlay City at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. – K.R.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Almont: Meredith Rinke scored 15 points but it was not enough to lift the Lady Raiders over host Brown City during a 37-34 loss on Tuesday. Brown City led 10-9 after the first quarter and outscored Almont 9-4 in the second to lead 19-13 at the half.

After the break, Brown City added to its lead thanks to a 10-4 run to go ahead 29-17 with one frame left to play. Almont didn’t go quietly, however, and outscored the Green Devils 17-8 in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to secure the win.

Rinke was joined by Grace Zimmerman, who had 10 points with two shots coming from downtown. Tyler Kautz added three points and Jennifer Curtis, Kristen Schapman and Paige Walton each had two points.

Almont, 1-2, travels to Armada today at 7 p.m. – A.V.

Dryden: The Lady Cardinals just couldn’t get into an offensive rhythm during a 41-26 road loss to Capac on Tuesday. Dryden trailed 8-3 after the first quarter and 21-11 at the half. The Chiefs went on a 15-4 run in the third to take a commanding 36-15 lead with one quarter remaining. Capac outscored Dryden for the fourth straight quarter thanks to a 10-6 advantage in the fourth to secure the win.

Hannah Peyerk led the Lady Cardinals with 12 points, one rebound and one assist. Ally Sobek followed with four points and one steal, Kelli Schenkel had three points with five rebounds and Ella Kage finished with two points with three assists.

Dryden, 1-1, hosts Bay City All Saints tomorrow at 7 p.m. – A.V.

Imlay City: The Lady Spartans were unable to keep pace with host Harbor Beach during a 50-26 loss on Tuesday. Imlay City trailed 14-1 after the first quarter and 24-6 at the break. In the third quarter, the Lady Spartans began to wake up offensively, but were still outscored 15-8 to trail 39-14 headed into the fourth. Imlay City scored 12 in the fourth while Harbor Beach had 11 for the 50-26 final.

Abby Schefka led the team with 14 points and was joined by Haley Medrano and Kendall Sommer, who both had four points. Kayla Louwsma finished with three points and Abigail Thibodeau had one.

Imlay City, 1-3, visits Algonac today at 7 p.m. – A.V.

Lakeville: The Lady Falcons lost to Genesee Christian 57-35 on Tuesday night.

“The score doesn’t show what we accomplished tonight,” said LakeVille coach Frank Gibson. “As a coach, I believe we grew a little and can take another step.”

Adara West posted her first career double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds, while also recording two blocks and a steal.

Kenedy Vines added six points and seven steals for the Lady Falcons. Doree Lincoln contributed three points, eight rebounds and two steals. Alexis Cargill scored eight points to go along with her one rebound and two assists. Abby Weiss had two points with seven rebounds, and Kirstyn Brown had five rebounds, one block and one assist.

Lakeville, 0-3, hosts Montrose Friday at 5:30 p.m. – J.O.

Lapeer: The Lady Lightning were slotted to face Oxford on Tuesday, but the game has been postponed until Thursday, Dec. 14. Lapeer will be off until then. – K.R.
