What’s Up?

Free student heart screening offered Sept. 16 at Lapeer High School

LAPEER — McLaren Lapeer Region and Beaumont Children’s will hold a free student heart screening from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16 at Lapeer High School.

Pre-registration is required. Call 810- 667-5514.

Every year students die from sudden cardiac arrest due to abnormal heart structure or abnormal rhythms. To help detect young people who are at risk, the screening will include: medical history evaluation, a blood pressure check and physical examination, electrocardiogram (ECG) and an echocardiogram.

This type of cardiac screening is generally not included in the routine physical required for participating in school sports. The student heart check is designed for high school students ages 13-18. Younger children are typically not screened because structural abnormalities including abnormal heart muscle thickening, which is the most common cause of sudden death in the United States, do not become apparent until later in adolescence.
