Last call for volunteers to help at Veterans Summit

LAPEER — A number of volunteer positions are still available for the Sept. 9 Veterans Summit — Honoring Heroes — to be held at the DuPont-Lapeer Airport from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The day-long event is geared toward connecting veterans and their families with various benefits and services they’ve earned by their service to our nation.

Resources focusing on employment, education, health and housing will be on hand, including the Michigan State Police, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Roush Performance. Those three entities are hiring veterans and veterans are encouraged to bring their resume.

The Detroit and Saginaw VA Medical centers will be on hand to answer inquiries about VA health care. A physician and a nurse from the Detroit VA Medical Center will be present to perform physical exams.

Veterans with confirmed hearing loss will be able to apply for a free closed captioned telephone during the day.

Volunteers are needed to help in the following categories:

• Chow hall

• Security

• Clean Up

• Staffing the Quarterdeck (information center)

• And other duties as assigned and needed.

Hadley monument site of POW/MIA Recognition Day

HADLEY — As part of the annual POW/ MIA National Recognition Day, a Lapeer County ceremony will be held on Friday, Sept. 15 at 6 p.m.. The event will be located this year at the Hadley flag pole monument (3551 Hadley Rd., Hadley) across from the downtown Hadley library.

The public is invited. This event is sponsored by the Lapeer County 50th Anniversary Commemorative Committee.

Lapeer County 4-H offers free card making workshop

LAPEER TWP. — Lapeer County 4-H will hold a free workshop for youth ages K-6 on Saturday, Sept. 30 from 10 a.m. to noon and the Lapeer County MSU

Extension Office, 1800 Imlay City Rd. in Lapeer Township. Youth do not need to be a current member of 4-H to attend workshop. Parents of youth K-3 are asked to stay. All supplies are provided and youth will go home with a variety of handmade cards they created with techniques learned during workshop.

Pre-registration is required by calling 810- 667-0343. Space is limited to 15 students. Registration deadline is Sept. 28.

Accommodations for persons with disabilities may be requested by contacting Lapeer County MSU Extension Office at 810-667- 0343 by Sept. 15 to make arrangements. Requests received after this date will be met when possible.
