SYBIL JOYCE BEHNKE

SYBIL JOYCE BEHNKE, 90, of Lapeer, passed away Friday, August 4, 2017 with family at her side.

Sybil was born in Ubly, on June 6, 1927, the second child of W.E. Reid and Ina (Burton) Reid. Sybil graduated from Caro High School in 1945, and then attended airline school in Minneapolis. She worked for TWA, the US Atomic Energy Commission and the Veterans Administration. She worked at Lapeer State Home/Oakdale Regional Center for 24 years as an attendant nurse and then a secretary.

Sybil enjoyed growing flowers, singing, dancing, music, traveling and reading. Mrs. Behnke was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church in Lapeer since the early 1950’s. She is a past member of the Town and Country ladies social group, the Order of the Eastern Star, the local horticulture and historical societies. After retirement, Sybil volunteered for hospice and the Suncrest Auxiliary. She enjoyed a long full life, above all else; she loved her family.

Mrs. Behnke is survived by her three children, David (Susan) Bridenbaugh of Columbiaville, Cherisse (Steve) Laidler of Lapeer and Marilyn (Jim) Legacy of Fenton; grandchildren, Greg Bridenbaugh, Brent (Alice) Bridenbaugh, Apryll (Brad) Baese, Kristy (Matthew) Budacki, Michelle (David) Knesek, Michael (fiancé, Heidi Clay) Legacy; great-grandchildren, Owen, Brenden, Madeline, Jackson, Carter, Ian, Madison, Jameson and Liam; sister, Joann Fick of Marysville, several step-children, step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ronald Bridenbaugh; second husband, Maynard “Ben” Behnke; her parents; brother, Robert Reid; grandchild, Stephenie Laidler; and special friend, Bernard Horn.

The family would like to thank the staff at Suncrest for the loving care shown her for the last year. Memorial contributions may be made to the Suncrest Auxiliary or LOVE, Inc.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Lapeer. Mrs. Behnke’s funeral is scheduled for Friday, August 11, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lapeer, officiated by Pastor Grant Lobb. Cremation will follow services, with private burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery at a later date.
