Volunteers, service clubs instrumental to make Lapeer Days happen every year

LAPEER —The sights, sounds, and scents are immediately recognizable to anyone who has visited the Lapeer Days Festival. Each summer, downtown Lapeer becomes a veritable metropolis of fairgoers and sightseers, all reveling in the activities, food, vendors, and, of course, the carnival rides.

Those sights and smells, however, would not be possible without a number of local service clubs and volunteers.

For more than half a century the Lapeer Optimist Club has been providing Lapeer Days with unique events that offer folks a good time and the opportunity to support the youth of Lapeer — and this year will be no exception.

This summer, they will hold the 54th annual chicken barbecue from noon to 6 p.m. in downtown Lapeer, and this year will be their 44th year supplying the beer tent. The beer tent will be available all weekend, with proceeds going towards Lapeer County youth programs, schools, and other organizations that reach out to the kids of the community. It provides an opportunity for adults to enjoy the festival weekend while giving back to the future generation.

Inside the beer tent, there will be a Vegas tent where games such as black jack, let it ride, and craps will take place along with a poker tournament. Hours for the beer tent will be noon to 12 a.m. on Friday, noon to 12 a.m. on Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

A number of other local organizations and clubs will be providing sustenance to revelers as well. If you’re looking food, there’s always the Elks Club Annual Dinner, which has been a fixture at Lapeer Days for years, and will feature barbecue pork instead of their traditional roast beef this year. This year’s dinner will be held Friday, August 18 from 4-8 p.m. The following day, the Elks will be offering up pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs and corn on the cob. And for vegetarians, Grace Episcopal Church will be serving up a variety of egg rolls all weekend.

Want to have fun and see the festival from the other side? The Lapeer Area Chamber of Commerce is looking for volunteers for the Lapeer Days festival, which will take place Aug. 19-21 in downtown Lapeer. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age with a valid ID. Volunteers will receive a festival T-shirt and have access to the hospitality suite during their shift(s) for food and beverages.

The Lapeer Days Festival needs several volunteers to help at the Kids Giant Sandbox, the Chamber booth, assist with logistics, special events, and help on Thursday, Aug. 17, which will be the festival’s setup day.

For those interested, contact the Chamber of Commerce at 810- 664-6641.
