LAPEER — The Lapeer Optimist Club hosted the 42nd annual Douglas A. Henley Memorial Golf Outing last Saturday, May 13, at Metamora Golf & Country Club, welcoming 41 teams for the charity event. All proceeds from the outing will benefit Lapeer County youth organizations.

The motto of The Lapeer Optimist Club is “Friend of Youth.” The club’s more than 55 current members are a fun-loving, compatible cross section of the business, social and cultural life of the Lapeer-area community whose single objective is to encourage the development of youth, in the belief that giving of one’s self in service to others will advance the well-being of the community.

Mike Butterfield, a long-time member of the Optimist Club, said, “We had 41 teams all together, so 164 players, and it was an awesome day. Last year was our first year ever we collected more than $30,000, and we’re expecting that we’ll surpass that this year. It was a great day and a great turnout for teams and sponsors.”

Said Optimist member Eric Mann, “The Optimists are remaining committed to supporting the local youth. We just made a major contribution to the LINKS Program, and this golf outing will continue to help us in making large donations similar to that throughout the year.”

Sponsors for this year’s outing included McLaren Lapeer Region, Lakestone Bank & Trust, View Newspaper Group, Jim Riehl’s Friendly, Village Printing, UAW, The Lodge Men’s Grooming, Mike Colpetzer, First Rate Plumbing, The Art of Dentistry, Lapeer Gold & Diamond, Todd Wenzel Automotive and Ray C’s Harley-Davidson.
