Libraries hosting diaper drive at end of month

LAPEER COUNTY — No child should ever wear the same diaper all day. However, the unfortunate truth is that even in Lapeer County many families struggle with providing this bare necessity for their babies.

With the cost of diapers at more than $100 each month per child, many parents must make the difficult choice between diapers and food. Infants who don’t have a clean diaper are more likely to suffer from urinary infections and diaper rash. These may lead to cranky babies, which can make them more prone to be a victim of child abuse.

No federal assistance programs pay for or provide diapers — not WIC or Food Stamps or Medicare. Non-profit organizations and state agencies working with families consistently list diapers as an on-going and top need, including here in Lapeer County.

An average infant uses up to 12 diapers a day; a toddler, up to eight per day. Parents who can’t afford diapers can’t leave their child at a daycare center that insists on a full day’s supply. Without childcare, these parents cannot go to work or school.

To help with this urgent need, libraries in Lapeer County are planning a diaper drive from April 21 through April 29. Unopened packages of diapers may be dropped off at any branch of the Lapeer District Library, at the North Branch District Library, at the Ruth Hughes Memorial District Library in Imlay City or the Dryden Township Library.

Diapers will stay in the community in which they are collected and be given to select community organizations to distribute. Many agencies are saying that size five and above are the sizes that are most needed.

Questions about the diaper drive may be directed to Jan Curtis, children’s librarian at the Lapeer District Library (Marguerite deAngeli Branch) at 810-664-6971 or at other local libraries: Dryden Township Library at 810-796-3586; North Branch Township Library at 810-688-2282; and Ruth Hughes Memorial District Library (Imlay City location) at 810-724-8043.
