Veterans helps celebrate, honor flags during Flag Day
MAYFIELD TWP. — Today is Flag Day, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4139 and American Legion Post 16 are teaming up to properly and respectfully dispose of worn, tattered American flags that they have gathered throughout the year.
“It’s a way of paying respect to the proper treatment of an American flag,” said Wayne Jacobs, past chaplain of the VFW post. “We don’t just wad them up and throw them in the garbage.”
At 5 p.m., there will be a meal at the VFW hall at 128 Daley Road in Mayfield Township. At 6 p.m., there will be a ceremony including a flag hand-off, prayer and 21-gun salute. The first flag will be burned during the ceremony, and then the rest will be added to the fire until they are gone.
Following the ceremony, Jacobs said, anyone who wants to learn more about the American flag including its history and how to properly fold and fly a flag is welcome to stick around for a short lesson.

LAPEER — The Lapeer Elks’ popular Ace of Hearts game is being held every week at Louie’s Sports Tavern in Lapeer. The game gives local residents a chance to win a growing jackpot while simultaneously helping the local community.
