VFW Post 4139 sponsors writing, essay contest

MAYFIELD TWP. — Veterans of Foreign Post 4139 and it’s auxiliaries are sponsoring the annual Voice of Democracy audio scriptwriting contest, and the Patriot’s Pen Youth Essay contest.

The Voice of Democracy audio/essay contest is open to all students in grades 9 through 12. The Patriot’s Pen essay contest is open to all students in grades 6-8.

Students are encouraged to express their patriotism while competing for awards. Prizes are awarded for winners at the post, district, state and national levels.

Entry deadline for these scholarships is Nov. 1.

FLC worskhop to help preschool children

LAPEER — Have fun and learn along with your preschooler at "ABCs, Activities, Books and Cookies!" This free interactive workshop, from 10- 10:45 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 21 at the Marguerite deAngeli Library in Lapeer is presented by the Family Literacy Center.

The workshop focuses on pre-reading and reading activities for preschool children 3-6 years old and a parent or caregiver. Participate in learning activities that will help develop reading skills. Siblings are welcome.

Lupus support group meets at LRMC on Oct. 12

LAPEER — Lapeer Lupus Support Group will meet next at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12 in lower level conference room, No. 5, at Lapeer Regional Medical Center. The Lupus Support Group is designed for lupus patients, family, friends and caregivers.

The meetings are held on the second Tuesday of month. There is no cost to attend.

United Way of Lapeer County to hold chili cook-off Oct. 30

LAPEER — United Way of Lapeer County was granted permission Monday evening by the Lapeer City Commission to hold its 7th annual Chili Invitational from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Oct. 30 at the courthouse square in downtown Lapeer.

The chili cook-off is used to kick-off United Way’s local fund raising campaign.

Acoustic music concert Oct. 8

LAPEER — Mother and daughter singer/somgwriters Theresa and Sarah Dalton will perform a benefit concert of uplifting acoustic music from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8 at 1009 N. Saginaw in Lapeer. Proceeds will go toward the St. Matthew’s Diaper Bank, Love, INC (In the Name of Christ) and the Lapeer Refugee.

Guests are asked to bring items such as new gloves, winter hats, disposable diapers (sizes 4,5, and 6), laundry detergents and dryer sheets. A freewill offering for the concert and charities will be received.
