Lapeer Road Country Cruise takes to M-24 next weekend
LAPEER COUNTY — The third annual Lapeer Road Country Cruise happens Saturday, June 26, from noon to 9 p.m. Classic cruisers and spectators will make their way along M-24 on a 25-mile trip between Lake Orion, the Village of Oxford, the Village of Metamora and Lapeer. Cruisers can travel in either direction. Each community will host the cruisers with their own activities and events.
“It’s turning out to be pretty popular now,” says event organizer Walt Wheeler, of Royal Auto Sound & Security in Oxford, the cruise’s primary sponsor. Wheeler started the cruise three years ago. He says its growing popularity has attracted more sponsors, including Cruis’news magazine for car buffs.
Cruisers can travel the route in either direction. In Lapeer, look for specials or discounts at participating sponsors. Those include Louie’s Sports Tavern, E.G. Nicks and Jim Riehl Automotive Group.
In Metamora, enjoy a 1950s-style Village Sock Hop hosted by the Historic White Horse Inn. Rich Eddy’s Rockin’ Oldies Band will provide the tunes from 2:30-4:30 p.m. The fun there will include limbo, twist and hula hoop contests and an impersonator of someone famous from the era. Dinner items of the 50s will be on the menu inside the White Horse, with kids’ meals served in classic cars. Outside, slow-roasted barbecue chicken, hot dogs and soda will be available. Staff at the White Horse Inn will be dressed for the sock hop.
Cruisin’ on down to Oxford, Oxford Tap will be manning the barbecue at Collier Lanes. Bowling will be just a buck per game.
In Lake Orion, Skalnek Ford will host a car show benefiting the Lake Orion American Legion to help purchase new flags for the graves of fallen soldiers. Dash plaques will go to the first 200 cars. Refreshments will be available.
Wally Edgar Chevrolet in Lake Orion will host a cookout, and Milosch’s Palace Chrysler Jeep Dodge will host a car show with awards, food and a DJ from noon to 5 p.m.
Cruise organizers remind cruisers to obey traffic laws and make sure vehicles are street legal, licensed and insured. For a map and more info, check out the cruise website at www.lapeercountrycruise.com.
