American Red Cross Class

LAPEER — The American Red Cross will offer an adult CPR/AED, child/Infant CPR and first aid course at its Lapeer location, 220 W. Nepessing St. from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23.

During the class students will learn lifesaving CPR, Automated External Defibrillation (AED) and first-aid skills. Participants can take the whole course, or just the parts in which they are interested. Cost ranges from $36 for just Adult CPR/AED to $64 for all course components. Details: 810-766-6405.

Area blood drives

LAPEER COUNTY — Give the gift of life by donating blood at one of these area blood drives this winter:

10 a.m.-7:45 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4 at Calvary Bible Church, 923 S. Main St.

Noon-5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7 at the Dryden Township Fire Dept., 5532 Main St.

1 -6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1310 N. Main St.

12:30 -6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12 at North Branch American Legion, 4075 Huron St.

Register now for gardening classes

LAPEER COUNTY — Area garden enthusiasts can register now for the Lapeer County Master gardener class this winter and learn all about gardening in the company of other gardening enthusiasts.

The Master Gardener class offers more than 40 hours of class work and the chance to volunteer in community service programs involving horticulture.

Classes begin Jan. 16 on each Saturday for 12 weeks from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Deadline for enrollment is Wednesday, Jan. 6.

Classes cost $290, which includes a reference book that cannot be purchased anywhere else. Classes are at the MSU Extension office, 287 W. Nepessing. Applications are available at the office, or by calling 810-667-0344 or online at

North Branch Senior Center hosts January events

NORTH BRANCH — The North Branch Senior Center launches the new year starting Tues., Jan. 5.

The new center at the renovated Jefferson school building will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., including computer access, card games, crafts and other activities.

Special events scheduled during January include:

Lapeer County EMS will offer blood pressure checks and glucose testing from 10 a.m.-noon on Thursday, Jan. 7.

Computer classes will begin this month. The basic computer class is set for Tuesday, Jan. 12, from 10 a.m.-noon. Graduates of the basic class can take an intermediate class on Tuesday, Jan. 19, from 10 a.m.-noon.

Bone density checks are offered by Marlette Hospital at the senior center on Thursday, Jan. 14, at noon. At 1 p.m. nurse practitioner Anita Schierlinger will make a presentation on osteoporosis. For further information on North Branch Senior Center activities, call 810-688-3334. — Nancy Angellotti
